它是世界童話的經(jīng)典之作，自問世以來，在世界各地影響十分廣泛。格林兄弟以其豐富的想象、優(yōu)美的語言給孩子們講述了一個(gè)個(gè)神奇而又浪漫的童話故事。在中國(guó)、日本也有根據(jù)《格林童話》創(chuàng)作的故事集。

1812年格林童話第一集出版，包含了86篇童話故事，第二集增加了70個(gè)故事，內(nèi)容不斷擴(kuò)充，格林兄弟生前出版（第七版）的故事集有200則，加上圣徒傳說多達(dá)210則，再加上補(bǔ)遺就有215則。其中以《灰姑娘》《玫瑰小姐》《受騙的青蛙》《雪白和玫瑰紅》《貓和老鼠交朋友》《聰明的農(nóng)家女》《三兄弟》《月亮》《熊皮人》《石竹》《白雪公主》《小紅帽》《睡美人》《糖果屋》《青蛙王子》《漁夫和他的妻子》《野狼和七只小羊》《大拇指》《勇敢的小裁縫》《不萊梅的城市樂手》《穿靴子的貓》較為聞名。
《格林童話》內(nèi)容廣泛，體裁多樣，除了童話外，還有民間故事、笑話、寓言等。其中故事大致分三類：一是神魔故事，如《灰姑娘》《白雪公主》《玫瑰公主》《青蛙王子》《小矮人與老鞋匠》《玻璃瓶中的妖怪》等，這些故事情節(jié)曲折、驚險(xiǎn)奇異、變幻莫測(cè)。二是以動(dòng)物為主人公的擬人童話，如《貓和老鼠》《狼與七只小山羊》《金鳥》等，這些故事中的動(dòng)物既富有人情，又具有動(dòng)物特點(diǎn)，生動(dòng)可愛。三是以日常生活為題材的故事，如《快樂的漢斯》《三兄弟》等，這些故事中的人物勤勞質(zhì)樸、幽默可愛。
時(shí)代背景：
格林兄弟生活和創(chuàng)作的命運(yùn)同德國(guó)文學(xué)的浪漫主義時(shí)期不可分割地聯(lián)系在一起。由法國(guó)大革命（1789—1794年）催生的浪漫主義文學(xué)運(yùn)動(dòng)在18—19世紀(jì)之交席卷全歐，最先在德國(guó)這片混亂、落后的土地上開花結(jié)果。
當(dāng)時(shí)的德國(guó)，可謂歐洲最災(zāi)難深重的民族國(guó)家。自“三十年戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)”（1618—1648年）后，淪為主要戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)的德國(guó)，其政治經(jīng)濟(jì)都分崩離析，雖然名義上還頂著“神圣羅馬帝國(guó)”的名號(hào)，實(shí)質(zhì)卻分裂成由360多個(gè)大大小小的公國(guó)和自由城市組成的“布頭封建帝國(guó)”’一個(gè)結(jié)構(gòu)松散的混合體，社會(huì)發(fā)展嚴(yán)重遲緩。1806年，橫掃歐洲的拿破侖戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)徹底瓦解了神圣羅馬帝國(guó)，在法國(guó)的征服和統(tǒng)治下，德國(guó)民眾的民族意識(shí)被喚醒，要求德意志民族統(tǒng)一強(qiáng)大的渴望空前高漲。在這種狀況下，大批知識(shí)分子投入到民族解放運(yùn)動(dòng)之中。但此時(shí)支離破碎的德國(guó)社會(huì)，諸多林立的公國(guó)之間存在的包括語言、文化等在內(nèi)的差異成為民族統(tǒng)一的障礙，為了消除這一文化上的阻礙，德國(guó)知識(shí)界開始宣揚(yáng)文化民族主義，希望借助古老的日耳曼民族文化來促成民族統(tǒng)一，這一時(shí)期的德國(guó)浪漫派在秉承浪漫主義文化精神的同時(shí)，亦將眼光轉(zhuǎn)向民間文化傳統(tǒng)領(lǐng)域，整理研究德國(guó)民間文學(xué)并使之發(fā)揚(yáng)光大。

從前有個(gè)貧苦的小女仆跟著她的主人家一起穿過一片大森林，當(dāng)他們走到森林的中間時(shí)，突然樹叢中竄出了一群強(qiáng)盜，見人就殺。小女孩嚇得魂不附體，趕快從馬車上跳了下來，藏在樹后，才幸免于難，其余的人統(tǒng)統(tǒng)給強(qiáng)盜殺光了。強(qiáng)盜們帶著他們的戰(zhàn)利品揚(yáng)長(zhǎng)而去，這時(shí)小女孩才從樹后走出來。目睹了眼前這場(chǎng)災(zāi)難，小女孩不禁悲痛地哭了起來，只聽她口中說："我這樣孤苦零丁的，現(xiàn)在我該怎么辦呢?我怎樣才能走出這林子?林間又無別人住在這里，我肯定會(huì)餓死的!"于是她便四處亂走，想找條出路，但一切均是枉然。到了晚上，她坐在一棵樹下，祈求上帝的庇護(hù)，心想不管發(fā)生什么事情，她都將呆在原地不動(dòng)。過了一會(huì)兒，一只白鴿飛了過來，口銜著小金鑰匙。它把鑰匙放在小女孩的手上，說："你看見那棵大樹上的小鎖嗎?用這片小鑰匙去打開它，你就會(huì)得到足夠的食物，也不會(huì)再挨餓了。"于是小女孩走到樹前，打開了樹上的鎖，發(fā)現(xiàn)樹里有個(gè)小盤子，里面盛著牛奶和白白的面包，她便放開肚皮吃了個(gè)飽。吃完后，她又說："現(xiàn)在是家里的母雞歸巢的時(shí)候了，我好累，要是能有張床睡覺該有多好!"剛說完，白鴿又飛了過來，口里叼著另一片小金鑰匙，說："打開那邊那棵樹，你就會(huì)得到一張床。"于是小女孩又去打開了那棵樹，發(fā)現(xiàn)一張白色的床，精美無比。她立刻感謝了上帝當(dāng)晚的保護(hù)，便躺下睡著了。第二天早上，那白鴿又飛來了，口里又叼著片小金鑰匙，說："打開那棵樹，你能找到衣裳。"小女孩便打開了樹，發(fā)現(xiàn)好多的衣服，都鑲嵌著金銀珠寶，比公主穿的還要漂亮。從此，她便住在森林里，那只白鴿每天飛來飛去，給她帶來各式各樣所需的東西。
這種生活多美好啊!
一天，白鴿飛來說道："你能替我辦點(diǎn)事嗎?""十分愿意，"小女孩答道。小白鴿說："我將帶你到一間小屋前，你走進(jìn)去，里邊會(huì)有一個(gè)老婦人坐在火爐邊對(duì)你說你好!但是千萬別回答她，不管她做什么，你從她右邊走過去;再往前，會(huì)有一扇打開的門，走進(jìn)去，那兒有各式各樣的戒指，還有珠光寶石的戒指，華貴無比。同樣別碰它們，只找一個(gè)樣式普通的，拿到后趕快回到我這里來。"小女孩便走到了小屋前，只見那兒果真坐著個(gè)老婦人，她盯著小女孩說："你好，我的孩子。"小女孩沒有搭理她，徑直打開了門。"走開!"老婦人一邊嚷，一邊來扯她的衣服想抓住她，"那是我的房子，沒有我的允許，誰也不準(zhǔn)進(jìn)去!"小女孩也不說話，掙脫她徑直沖進(jìn)屋內(nèi)。屋里的桌子上確有許多戒指，在她眼前閃閃發(fā)光。小女孩翻遍了所有的戒指，想找出那只模樣普通的，但沒找著。她找啊找啊，這時(shí)她突然留意到那老婦人手提一只鳥籠，正準(zhǔn)備偷偷摸摸地溜走。小女孩馬上趕過去，劈手奪過鳥籠，舉在眼前仔細(xì)一看，原來里邊有只小鳥的口中正叼著一個(gè)模樣普通的戒指。于是她便伸手進(jìn)去拿出了戒指，高高興興地跑了回去。她以為小白鴿一定會(huì)來取戒指，但是它卻沒有來。小女孩只好靠在一棵樹上，靜靜地等候小白鴿。她就這樣一直靠樹站著，這時(shí)她只覺得樹兒又軟又松，樹枝也垂了下來。突然，樹枝變成了兩只手臂一下抱住了她。小女孩扭頭一看，原來她靠在上面的樹兒竟變成了一位英俊瀟灑的年輕人。他就是這樣地抱著小女孩，深情地吻著她，說："是你破了那個(gè)老巫婆的妖術(shù)，把我救了出來。她曾把我變成一棵樹，每天，我還得做兩小時(shí)的白鴿。只要她掌握著這個(gè)戒指，我便沒法恢復(fù)人形。"接著，那些被巫婆變成樹的仆人和馬匹，都脫了巫術(shù)，一個(gè)個(gè)站在他的身后。這位年輕人原來是位王子殿下，王子將他們重新帶回宮。后來王子和小女孩成了親，生活過得幸福又快樂。

A poor servant-girl was once travelling with the family with which she was in service, through a great forest, and when they were in the midst of it, robbers came out of the thicket, and murdered all they found. All perished together except the girl, who had jumped out of the carriage in a fright, and hidden herself behind a tree. When the robbers had gone away with their booty, she came out and beheld the great disaster. Then she began to weep bitterly, and said, "What can a poor girl like me do now? I do not know how to get out of the forest, no human being lives in it, so I must certainly starve."
She walked about and looked for a road, but could find none. When it was evening she seated herself under a tree, gave herself into Gods keeping, and resolved to sit waiting there and not go away, let what might happen. When, however, she had sat there for a while, a white dove came flying to her with a little golden key in its mouth. It put the little key in her hand, and said, "Dost thou see that great tree, therein is a little lock, it opens with the tiny key, and there thou wilt find food enough, and suffer no more hunger."
Then she went to the tree and opened it, and found milk in a little dish, and white bread to break into it, so that she could eat her fill. When she was satisfied, she said, "It is now the time when the hens at home go to roost, I am so tired I could go to bed too." Then the dove flew to her again, and brought another golden key in its bill, and said, "Open that tree there, and thou willt find a bed."
So she opened it, and found a beautiful white bed, and she prayed God to protect her during the night, and lay down and slept. In the morning the dove came for the third time, and again brought a little key, and said, "Open that tree there, and thou wilt find clothes." And when she opened it, she found garments beset with gold and with jewels, more splendid than those of any kings daughter.
So she lived there for some time, and the dove came every day and provided her with all she needed, and it was a quiet good life.
Once, however, the dove came and said, "Wilt thou do something for my sake?" - "With all my heart," said the girl. Then said the little dove, "I will guide thee to a small house; enter it, and inside it, an old woman will be sitting by the fire and will say, Good-day.
But on thy life give her no answer, let her do what she will, but pass by her on the right side; further on, there is a door, which open, and thou wilt enter into a room where a quantity of rings of all kinds are lying, amongst which are some magnificent ones with shining stones; leave them, however, where they are, and seek out a plain one, which must likewise be amongst them, and bring it here to me as quickly as thou canst." The girl went to the little house, and came to the door.
There sat an old woman who stared when she saw her, and said, "Good-day my child." The girl gave her no answer, and opened the door. "Whither away," cried the old woman, and seized her by the gown, and wanted to hold her fast, saying, "That is my house; no one can go in there if I choose not to allow it." But the girl was silent, got away from her, and went straight into the room. Now there lay on the table an enormous quantity of rings, which gleamed and glittered before her eyes.
She turned them over and looked for the plain one, but could not find it. While she was seeking, she saw the old woman and how she was stealing away, and wanting to get off with a bird-cage which she had in her hand. So she went after her and took the cage out of her hand, and when she raised it up and looked into it, a bird was inside which had the plain ring in its bill.
Then she took the ring, and ran quite joyously home with it, and thought the little white dove would come and get the ring, but it did not. Then she leant against a tree and determined to wait for the dove, and, as she thus stood, it seemed just as if the tree was soft and pliant, and was letting its branches down. And suddenly the branches twined around her, and were two arms, and when she looked round, the tree was a handsome man, who embraced and kissed her heartily, and said, "Thou hast delivered me from the power of the old woman, who is a wicked witch. She had changed me into a tree, and every day for two hours I was a white dove, and so long as she possessed the ring I could not regain my human form."
Then his servants and his horses, who had likewise been changed into trees, were freed from the enchantment also, and stood beside him. And he led them forth to his kingdom, for he was a Kings son, and they married, and lived happily.
