Recently we held a class meeting to discuss the problem of pedestrians crossing the street while the traffic light is red. As we could see, some pedestrians don’t obey traffic rule ,and jay-walk frequently. This blocks

traffic seriously affects drivers and causes accidents to happen, endangering the safety of pedestrians and drivers alike. In a word , jaywalking produces negative effects and does not help to develop good

  social behavior.

It is really a pity to see all this in our society, and to deal with the situation , the government has taken some measures. When caught jaywalking, pedestrians are reprimanded so that they will become aware

of the dangers of doing this , or they are fined on the spot. Sometimes the traffic police will report jaywalkers to their workplace and expose them to the public. However, it will still take a long time to stop pedestrians

  from jaywalking.

Many people appreciate the conveniences of the city. The city offers a wide choice of jobs for adults and schools for children. It also provides plenty of facilities for culture, entertainment and recreationrestaurants, department, stores, cinemas, and so on. Besides, transportation is usually well developed in the city, with a variety of modes of travel, including buses, trains and subways.

In the country, on the other hand, one can enjoy the advantages of fresh air and food, and a more relaxed life style. Housing is usually spacious and inexpensive in the country. And, as for recreation, what could be more relaxing than a stroll down a country lane amid beautiful scenery? However there are advantages to living in either the city or the country. City air tends to be polluted, and the streets are always crowded and noisy. In the country, on the other hand, the lack of stimulating activities can make a person feel bored and isolated.

All in all, I would say that living in the city is best, for the convenience the city offers in terms of education and work; after all, one can always spend vacations in the countryand get the best of both.?

The saying that practice makes perfect means that after you have plenty of practice in what you are doing, you will be perfect in it. He who practices a lot will master the skill more quickly than he who seldom or hardly practices.

For example, when we learn English, we have to learn grammar, words, expressions and so on. The most important thing may be how to put what we have learned into practice. If you only learn the grammar rules by heart and don't do enough exercises, it is certain that you can't understand them perfectly. But if you practice a lot, maybe you will understand them more deeply and you can find some good methods of applying them. Memorizing English words whenever time permits, we can easily memorize them and can even find a way to memorize them more quickly.

There is another example. A famous singer can sing very well. Of course, his talent is very important, but practice is necessary. It is necessary to practice to make the singer sing better and better.

It is evident that practice is important for everybody. If you want to improve your study and work, you should remember that practice makes perfect.

  Issue

The following appeared in a memorandum from the business department of the Apogee Company. When the Apogee Company had all its operations in one location, it was more profitable than it is today. Therefore, the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location. Such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees. Discuss how well reasoned... etc.

In this argument the author concludes that the Apogee Company should close down field offices and conduct all its operations from a single, centralized location because the company had been more profitable in the past when all its operations were in one location. For a couple of reasons, this argument is not very convincing.

First, the author assumes that centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and streamlining supervision of employees. This assumption is never supported with any data or projections. Moreover, the assumption fails to take into account cost increases and inefficiency that could result from centralization. For instance, company representatives would have to travel to do business in areas formerly served by a field office, creating travel costs and loss of critical time. In short, this assumption must be supported with a thorough cost-benefit analysis of centralization versus other possible cost-cutting and/or profit-enhancing strategies.

Second, the only reason offered by the author is the claim that Apogee was more profitable when it had operated from a single, centralized location. But is centralization the only difference relevant to greater past profitability? It isentirely9possible that management has become lax regarding any number of factors that can affect the bottom line (帳本底線(xiàn)) such as inferior products, careless product pricing,inefficient10production, poor employee expense account monitoring, ineffectiveadvertising11,sloppy12buying policies and otherwasteful13spending. Unless the author can rule out other factors relevant to diminishing profits, this argument commits the fallacy of assuming that just because one event (decreasing profits) follows another (decentralization), the second event has been caused by the first.

In conclusion, this is a weak argument. To strengthen the conclusion that Apogee should close field offices and centralize, this author must provide a thorough cost-benefit analysis of available alternatives and rule out factors other than decentralization that might be affecting current profits negatively.

During the summer vacation, I went back to my hometown in hunan with my parents to see grandpa.

In my hometown, I experienced a lot of new things. One of the things that makes sense to me is the coal stove.

Getting up in the morning, I saw grandpa busy in the kitchen. I asked grandpa what he was doing. Grandpa said, "I'm in the coal stove." I say to grandpa: let me try! "

I used to be very simple to make a living coal stove, but actually coal stove is not good. Grandpa taught me to raw coal stove first: "raw coal stove, the first to put some charcoal in the furnace and waste paper and other combustible kindling, again on the charcoal, and then light the kindling, after the charcoal burning red, then pick up the briquette gently put charging, this will do." Grandpa said he was busy with other things.

I put the charcoal and waste paper in the stove and used a lighter to go to the stove. As a result, my arm was short and I didn't burn my hand. Just as I was frowning, I suddenly saw a bottle of wine on my grandfather's stove. My eyes lit up and a good idea came to my heart. I put a little wine on the waste paper. Just a moment, a fire! I was so happy that I hurried to add waste paper and charcoal to the stove.

When the charcoal burned red, I put a coal ball into it and waited for it to burn. I stood and thought: "ah! It was so easy!" I couldn't help smug. When I put a second coal ball, the coal ball was rotten because of my carelessness, so I had to cry over my face and pick up the rotten coal ball. With pliers a good coal ball, tiptoe, carefully put in, which is like relief of relief.

In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.

The plain was rich with crops; there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare. There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery. In the dark it was like summer lightning, but the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming.

Sometimes in the dark we heard the troops marching under the window and guns going past pulled by motor-tractors. There was much traffic at night and many mules on the roads with boxes ofammunition on each side of their pack-saddles and gray motor-trucks that carried men,: and other trucks with loads covered with canvas that moved slower in the traffic. There were big guns too mat passed in the day drawn by tractors, the long barrels of the guns covered with green branches and green leafy branches and vines laid over the tractors. To the north we could look across a valley and see a forest of chestnut trees and behind it another mountain on this side of the river. There was fighting for that mountain too, but it was not successful, and in the fall when the rains came the leaves all fell from the chestnut trees and the branches were bare and the trunks black with rain. The vineyards were thin and bare, branched too and all the country wet and brown and dead with the autumn. There were mists over the river and clouds on the mountain and trucks splashed mud on the road and the troops were muddy and wet in their capes; their rifles were wet and under their capes the two leather cartridge-boxes on the front of belts, gray leather boxes heavy with the packs of clips of thin, long 6.5mm. cartridges, bulged forward under the capes so that the men, passing on the road, marched as though they were six months gone with child.

St.Petersburg.The very name brings to mind some of Russia's greatest poets, writers and composers:Pushkin,Dostoevsky,Tchaikovsky. The 19th century was a golden age for St.Petersburg's wealthy classes. It was a world of ballets and balls,of art and literature,of tea and caviar.

The golden age ended with the advent of World War 1.Working people were growing more and more discontented. In 1917,Communism came, promising peace and prosperity.

St.Petersburg had become Petrograd in 1914.People wanted a Russian name for their city.Ten years later, the city's name changed again, this time to Leningrad. Then in 1991,Leningraders voted to restore the city's original name. Some people opposed the name change altogether.Others thought it was just too soon.Old,run-down Soviet Leningrad, they said, was not the St.Petersburg of 19th-century literature.
