聯(lián)合國(guó)環(huán)境規(guī)劃署在每年的年初公布當(dāng)年的世界環(huán)境日主題，并在每年的世界環(huán)境日發(fā)表環(huán)境狀況的年度報(bào)告書(shū)。中國(guó)國(guó)家環(huán)�？偩衷谶@期間發(fā)布中國(guó)環(huán)境狀況公報(bào)。
中國(guó)從1985年6月5日開(kāi)始舉辦紀(jì)念世界環(huán)境日的活動(dòng)，以“青年人口，環(huán)境”為主題 。自此之后，每年的6月5日全國(guó)各地都要舉辦紀(jì)念活動(dòng)。1993年北京被選為舉辦慶�；顒�(dòng)的城市，其主題是“打破貧窮與環(huán)境的怪圈”。2014年4月修訂公布的《中華人民共和國(guó)環(huán)境保護(hù)法》第十二條：每年6月5日為環(huán)境日。
