Christmas is the most important festival in the western world. It falls on December 25th. When my mother and I stayed in America, we were invited by one of my mothers friends to have Christmas with an American family. We bought some presents for our American friends on our way to their house.

They had prepared different kinds of gifts for their family and guests when we got to their house, such as Christmas candles, cakes, cards, little toys, biscuits and so on. A Christmas tree was placed in the comer of the brilliant hall. How beautiful it was! We were impressed by these. We had a big meal. After dinner, they told us some interesting stories about Christmas. We learned that Christmas had something to do with God. We went to bed at midnight. Though we knew the Santa Claus was not true, we were still waiting for the Santa Claus with white beard to bring us presents. And we received many beautiful presents the next morning.

This Christmas was really unforgettable. Not only did I have a good time, but also I knew something about foreign culture.

Christmas Day falls on the twenty-fifth of December. It is a very happy day for many boys and girls. Before the term ends in some schools, the children act a nativity or “birth” play, showing how Jesus was born in a stable.

On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready. The younger children think that Father Christmas will come down the chimney or fireplace, so they hang up a sock for him to put presents in. The greedy ones even hang up a pillow-case or a sack to try to get more presents. Later that night, father or mother will put presents in the sock, and leave others at the side of the bed.

On Christmas morning, the children wake up very early. Some even turn on the light at two oclock, and most of them are awake by six oclock, and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one oclock in the afternoon, the Christmas dinner is brought in. The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten. Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it. The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas holidays comes to an end.

Christmas is one of the most important celebrations of the year for the western countries. it falls on the twenty- fifth of december and has the same importance as chinese new year to people with english backgrounds. the celebration is for the birth of jesus christ, who is the son of god in christianity. now days christmas is no longer only celebrated by the christians, but by most people from all over the world.

On the twenty- fourth of december everyone gets excited for it’s the day before christmas which is called christmas eve. the children are usually sent to bed early and are warned that “santa claus will only e and give you a present if you be good.” the younger kids actually believe that santa will e down the chimney on the sleigh that’s pulled by his reindeers. food like short bread and beer are prepared for santa when he es, however most times parents just eat them. some children put socks and sacks up for the holding of the presents (that their parents put in).

Rise and shine on christmas morning! the children are always the first ones to wake up, some even do at four. present wrappers everywhere! they look into their presents with a big smile on their face and oh dear….i hope no one’s disappointed. i feel sorry for anyone that got pink underwear. children play while dinner is prepared by the adults. the christmas dinner are usually eaten together by relatives. the tradition of christmas pudding and roosters are usually eaten with deserts afterwards. the rest of the day is usually games and fun before the good days all e to an end.

I wish everyone a merry christmas and a happy new year!

Ah! Christmas morning! Children like to wake up early while it’s still dark and sneak(躡手躡腳) into the living room to check the presents—find any with their names on it, shake them to guess what’s inside, and then maybe they’ll go back to bed and pretend they are still asleep when their parents come to wake them with a “Merry Christmas!”

But almost no one I know gets completely dressed or eats a regular breakfast on Christmas morning。 They just put on robes(長袍) or wear their pajamas(睡衣) and go to see what’s under the Christmas tree。 Some Christian families have a tradition of reading the Bible story of Jesus’ birth。 Maybe it’s to remind(提醒) the children that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday。

Someone will begin to take the presents out from under the tree, see whose name is on the package, and then pass them around。 Some families wait until all the presents have been given out before opening any of them, while others open each one as it comes to them。 There are many “thank you” to the ones who gave the gifts。 New clothes are tried on to see if they are fit, and of course the most interesting toys will immediately be played with。

Usually among the Christmas gifts will be some especially delicious candy or cake or cookies which everyone tastes。 These sweet things may be the only breakfast many people eat on Christmas morning。 After the gifts have been opened, the room will be tidied up except where the children are playing with their toys。 Everyone will wash and get dressed for the day。

Excellent! I"m expecting greater progress from you in writing。

It is said that around sixteenth Century, the German evergreen pine branches to the furnishings in the house, and later, the German missionary Martin Ruud put the candle on the fir tree in the woods, and then lit, it looks like to guide people to the Bethlehem stars, like two thousand years ago, the three Magi found Jesus in accordance with the stars in general. Today, people have used small light bulbs instead of candles.

A long time ago, a farmer, met a poor child on Christmas day, he received a child, the child when he left pine root ed in the ground and immediately turned into a pine tree, hung above a gift to farmers in return for the kindness.

However, the Christmas tree really appeared at Christmas, first seen in Germany and then introduced into Europe and the United States as an indispensable ornament for Christmas. They usually use colorful lights, wax, gifts or angels to decorate Christmas trees, especially those living in the northwestern part of the United States. Because of the abundant forest resources, they will choose a real tree as Christmas tree. The Christmas tree has a wide variety of natural pine and cypress Christmas trees, and artificial Christmas trees and white Christmas trees. Every Christmas tree is covered with dazzling decorations, but there must be a huge star at the top of every tree. Its like a star guiding the eastern three doctors to find Jesus. And in traditional customs, only one owner of the family can hang the star of hope.

Although it is generally agreed that the Christmas tree in its current form came from Germany in the early 19th century, the tradition of decorating a tree to mark winter celebrations dates back hundreds of years to Roman times, when they used to decorate evergreen trees with small pieces of metal to celebrate Saturnalia. In medieval times the ‘Paradise Play‘ was performed every year on 24 December. This depicted the creation of Man and the fall of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and always included an evergreen hung with apples which represented the apple tree of temptation.

There is a legend that St Boniface, an English monk, came upon a group of pagans gathered around an oak tree who were preparing to sacrifice a child to the God Thor. In order to stop the sacrifice, and save the child‘s life, St Boniface is said to have felled the tree with one blow of his fist. Later on, a fir tree grew in place of the oak and this, St Boniface told the pagans, was the Tree of Life and represented the Christ Child.

Legend also suggests that, in the late 16th century, Martin Luther (the founder of the Protestant religion) was the first to decorate an indoor tree with candles when he attempted to recreate the stars shining over a forest of evergreens.

The first mention of decorated trees being taken indoors came in 1605 in Germany - a country with a long Christmas tree history! The trees were initially decorated with fruit and sweets together with hand made objects such as quilled snowflakes and stars. German Christmas Markets began to sell shaped gingerbreads and wax ornaments which people bought as souvenirs of the fair and took home to hang on their tree.

Tinsel was also invennted in Germany in about 1610. Up until fairly recently real silver was used, which was pulled into wafer thin strips by special machines. This was durable but tarnished quickly and mmany experiments took place to try and find an alternative - including a mix off lead and tin, which was too heavy and kept breaking. It was only in the mid 20th century that a viable alternative was found.

Artificial trees were invented in the 1880‘s in a bid to try and stop some of the damage being caused to real trees due to people lopping the tip off large trees, thus preventing the trees from growing any further. It got so bad in Germany that laws had to be brought in to prevent people having more than one tree.

Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is credited with being responsible for introducing the custom of the Christmas tree to the British public by decorating the first English Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1841 using candles, sweets, fruit and gingerbread.

The popularity of the Christmas tree grew in Britain during the first half of the 20th century, with trees becoming bigger and more elaborately decorated with bells, baubles and tinsel. However, the onset of the Second World War resulted in a ban on cutting down trees for decoration and people resorted to having small, artificial tabletop trees bearing home made decorations. These were often taken down into the air raid shelters when the sirens sounded to provide a bit of Christmas cheer!

This all changed following the war, and large trees were erected in many public places to celebrate Christmas. The most famous of these is the tree in Trafalgar Square, London which is an annual gift from the Norwegian government to give thanks for the help they received from Britain during the war.
