我國古代在清明時節(jié)就有插柳植樹的傳統(tǒng)，而近代植樹節(jié)則最早由美國的內布拉斯加州發(fā)起。19世紀以前，內布拉斯加州是一片光禿禿的荒原，樹木稀少，土地干燥，大風一起，黃沙漫天，人民深受其苦。1872年，美國著名農學家朱利葉斯·斯特林·莫爾頓提議在內布拉斯加州規(guī)定植樹節(jié)，動員人民有計劃地植樹造林。當時州農業(yè)局通過決議采納了這一提議，并由州長親自規(guī)定今后每年4月份的.第三個星期三為植樹節(jié)。這一決定做出后，當年就植樹上百萬棵。此后的16年間，又先后植樹6億棵，終于使內布拉斯加州10萬公頃的荒野變成了茂密的森林。為了表彰莫爾頓的功績，1885年州議會正式規(guī)定以莫爾頓先生的生日4月22日為每年的植樹節(jié)，并放假一天。
在美國，植樹節(jié)是一個州定節(jié)日，沒有全國統(tǒng)一規(guī)定的日期。但是每年4、5月間，美國各州都要組織植樹節(jié)活動。例如，羅德艾蘭州規(guī)定每年5月份的第二個星期五為植樹節(jié)，并放假一天。其他各州有的是固定日期，也有的是每年由州長或州的其他政府部門臨時決定植樹節(jié)日期。每當植樹節(jié)到來，以學生為主的社會各界群眾組成浩浩蕩蕩的植樹大軍，投入植樹活動。
據(jù)統(tǒng)計。美國有1/3的地區(qū)為森林樹木所覆蓋，這個成果同植樹節(jié)是分不開的。
