The United States of America, also known as the United States, the U.S., the U.S.A., and America, is a country in North America that shares land borders with Canada and Mexico, and a sea border with Russia. Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, the United States is a federal republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C.

The present-day continental United States has been inhabited for at least 15,000 years by indigenous tribes.[1] After European exploration and settlement in the 16th century, the English established their own colonies—and gained control of others that had been begun by other European nations—in the eastern portion of the continent in the 17th and early 18th centuries. On 4 July 1776, at war with Britain over fair governance, thirteen of these colonies declared their independence. In 1783, the war ended in British acceptance of the new nation. Since then, the country has more than quadrupled in size: it now consists of 50 states and one federal district; it also has numerous overseas territories.

At over 3.7 million square miles (over 9.5 million km), the U.S. is the third or fourth largest country by total area, depending on whether the disputed areas of China are included. It is the worlds third most populous nation, with nearly 300 million people.

The United States has maintained a liberal democratic political system since it adopted its Articles of Confederation on 1 March 1781 and the Constitution, the Articles replacement, on 17 September 1787. American military, economic, cultural, and political influence increased throughout the 20th century; with the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, the nation emerged as the worlds sole remaining superpower.[2] Today, it plays a major role in world affairs.

Caucus goers met at sites around the state to show support for their candidate and be counted in the first contest of the 2016 Presidential nominating cycle.

This year the Iowa caucuses drew many first-time caucus-goers.

John Clark is one of them. He says that he took the time to caucus in order to make his voice heard.

"I feel like its part of being American as you get the chance to do this, you get the chance to say what you believe in, and have a voice and vote."

Thanking his supporters, Ted Cruz relished in a major victory over Donald Trump, the national poll leader.

"Iowa has sent notice that the republican nominee in the next president of the United States will not be chosen by the media, will not be chosen by the Washington establishment, will not be chose by the lobbyists but will be chosen by the most incredible power for force where all sovereignty resides in our nation by we the people, the American people."

Trump is a controversial figure among Iowa voters.

"I think he can bring the rights to change the government back to the people."

"I can say I will not be supporting Trump. Our views just dont agree. I believe in equality and respect for all people and I dont think he does."

Despite a disappointing second place finish for the often bombastic real-estate mogul, Trump was gracious in conceding defeat.

"I am really honored. And I want to congratulate Ted and I want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates including Mike Huckabee."

Analysts say that Florida Senator Marco Rubio is likely to enjoy increased momentum going forward.

Rubio finished a solid third, just one percentage point behind Trump but well ahead of the rest of the GOP field.

Hillary Clinton endured a nail-biter of a night that finished in a virtual tie with Bernie Sanders.

Clinton says she will keep fighting on in her address to supporters.

"I want you to know I will keep doing what I have done my entire life. I will keep standing up for you. I will keep fighting for you. I will always work to achieve the America that I believe in where the promise of that dream that we hold out to our children and our grandchildren never fades but inspires generations to come. Join me, lets go win the nomination."

Although for many, tonight is just the beginning of a long slog to the two major parties national conventions in August, it also marks the end of the line for candidates who failed to gain traction.

Two contenders: Maryland Governor Martin OMalley and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, dropped out after poor showings today in Iowa.

A history of long and effortless success can be a dreadful handicap, but,if properly handled,it may become a driving force. When the United States entered just such a glowing period after the end of the Second World War,it had a market eight times larger than any competitor ,giving its industries unparalleled economies of scale. Its scientists were the worlds best, its workers the most skilled.American and Americans were prosperous beyongd the dreams of the Europeans and Asians whose economeics the war had destroyed.

It was inevitable that this primacy should have narrowed as other countries grew richer.Just as inevitably, the retreat from predominace proved painful.By the mid 1980s Americans had found themselves at a losss over their fading industrial competitiveness. Some huge American industries, such as consumer electronics, hand shrunk or vanished in the face of foreign competitiong.By 1987 there was only one American television maker left,Zenith.(Now there is none :Zenith was bought by SouthKoreasLGElectronics in July.)Foreign made cars and textiles were sweeeping into the domestic market.Americas machine-tool industry was on the ropes. For a while it looked as though the makeing of semiconductors, whidh America had invented and which sat at the heart of the new computer age,was going to be the next caualty.

All of this caused a crisis of confidenc.Americans stopped taking prosperity ofr granted .They began to believe that their way of doing business was failing, and that their incomes would therefore shourtly begin to fall as well .The mind -1980s brought one inquiry after another into the causes ofAmericas in dustrial decline.Thir sometimes sensational findings were filled with warnings about the growing competitiong from overseas.

How things have changed!I1995 the United States can look back on five years of solid growth while Japan has been struggling.Few Americans attribute this Self doubt has yielded to blind pride.American industry has changed its structure ,has gone on a diet ,has learnt to be more quik witted, according to Richard Cavanagh, executive dean of Harvards Kennedy School of Government. It makes me proud to be an American just to see how our businesses are improving theirproductivity, says Stephen Moore of the Cato Institute ,a think tank in Washington,DC,And William Sahlman of the Harvard Business School believes that people will look back on this perido as a golden age of business management in the United States.

  美國英語作文 13

This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. The writer O’Henry called it the one day that is purely American. Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. But it has ritual meaning. Some Americans attend religious services on the day before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving morning. Others travel long distances to be with their families. They have a large dinner which is the main part of the celebration.

For many Americans, Thanksgiving is the only time when all members of the family gather. The holiday is a time of family reunion. Thanksgiving week is generally one of the busiest travel times of the year. However, experts say this year probably will be different. On September 11th, thousands of people died when terrorists hijacked airplanes that struck buildings in Washington D.C. and New York City. Many people now say they are worried about flying on a plane. Travel experts say almost 6 percent fewer people will make long trips this Thanksgiving compared with last year. Many Americans who usually visit family and friends by plane are driving shorter distances instead this week.

Some mental health experts say the attacks have frightened people. They say people feel safer and happier close to home. More than any other holiday, Thanksgiving is a celebration of family and home. Many people say that this year they are especially thankful for their families and friends and the good things in their lives. On Thanksgiving, people enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking. The traditional meal almost always includes the turkey with a bread mixture cooked inside. Other traditional Thanksgiving food served with turkey are sweet potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Stores are said to sell more food at Thanksgiving than at any other time of the year, and many people eat more food at Thanksgiving than at any other time of the year. Over the years, Americans have added new traditions to their Thanksgiving celebration. For example, a number off professional and university football games are played on Thanksgiving Day. Some of the games are broadcast on national television.

Today were going to visit Stanford university, a very old university, and its recognized as one of the worlds most distinguished universities.

Our bus stopped at Stanford university, and I saw an antique building. All the way forward, the building that was built of stone, though made of stone, was built very fine, with different patterns engraved on it. It was then that I was attracted by a church building, whose metope was a beautiful picture of more than 20,000 pieces of Mosaic, which is the memorial church of Stanford university. At Stanford, there is no lack of sophistication, and even the flowers and plants are so finely manicured that, on a large lawn, the flowers and plants are pruned into a big Stanford university logo.

At Stanford, one hour at a time, we had to be reluctant to say goodbye to her. This famous university has given me so much hope that I can go to this university when I grow up.

Social customs differ in different parts of the world If we don"t realize this, misunderstanding may arise between people that behave differently In the United States, people are very informal in social situations For example, they call each other by their given names when two people first meet So do the young to the old In,it would be regarded quite impolite to do so.

Another difference is about what can be talked about in a conversation A Chinese thinks nothing of being asked how much his coat cost while Americans think it impolite to ask such a question A Chinese woman doesn"t care if she is asked about her age Politics, religions,as well as ines are often talked about among Chinese But in the United States these kinds of subjects are usually avoided in conversation.

Today we set foot in a fascinating place - Barnard primary school in the holy land of Argo.

As soon as I got off the bus, a gentle breeze swept through the primary school, which was full of flowers and trees. Although it was winter, I felt that the four seasons were like spring. Then a man in a suit came over. He was very kind, and he was the principal of the elementary school. He waved kindly to us, and he led us into the learning paradise. As I entered the classroom, a joyful song echoed around my ears, and the dancing of passion was accompanied by a flexible body, which was very impressive! Most American are happy to talk about their homes. And if theyve done anything special in their home, theyll let you know what it was, and maybe tell you what it cost to put in the Jacuzzi, deck or patio, etc. Most Americans live in cities, but nearly as many live in suburbs. Suburban American has shopping centers called malls and residents usually need a care to get around. Most of the houses in the suburbs are one or two stories tall, with private yards and gardens and garage. There are few tall buildings in the suburbs. 美國英語作文 22

the american revolution was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in france and russia, when both were already independent nations. significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. what happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. during the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. most of them were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on.

america's war of independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. one was canada, which received its first large influ of english-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the united states. another was australia, which became a penal colony now that america was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. the third newcomer-the united states-based itself squarely on republican principles.

yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. in some states, notably connecticut and rhode island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already eisting. british officials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and parliament.

On July 21, we got up at 6:30 am and after more than half an hours drive, we came to Wall Street. There was a bull in the street, and I took many photos with my parents. Based on historical documents, modern survey and statistics, as well as the result of predecessor studies, the trend and main process of forest dynamics are recognized. The forest area and forest coverage rates for each province of China from 1700 to 1949 are es- timated backward by every 50 years. Linking the result with modern National Forest Inventory data, the spatial-temporal dynamics of Chinese forest in recent 300 years (AD 1700–1998) is quantitatively analyzed. The study shows that in recent 300 years, the forest area in current territory of China has declined by 0.95×108 hm2 (or 9.2% of the coverage rate) in total, with a trend of decrease and recovery. Before the 1960s, there was a trend of accelerated de- scending. The forest area was reduced by 1.66×108 hm2 (or 17% of the coverage rate) in 260 years. While after the 1960s, there has been a rapid increase. The forest area increased by 0.7×108 hm2 (or 8% of the coverage rate) in 40 years. The study also shows that there is a significant spatial difference in the dynamics of forest. The amplitudes of increasing and de- creasing in western China are both smaller than the ones in eastern China. During the rapid declining period from 1700 to 1949, the most serious decrease appeared in the Northeast, the Southwest and the Southeast, where the coverage rate in most provinces dropped over 20%.

In Heilongjiang Province, the coverage rate dropped by 50%. In Jilin Province, it dropped by 36%. In Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, it dropped by 42%. In Yunnan Prov- ince, it dropped by 35%. During the recovery period 1949–1998, the western provinces, mu- nicipality and autonomous regions, including Ningxia, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Si- chuan–Chongqing, Yunnan, Tibet, Xinjiang and Qinghai, etc, the increase rates are all below 5%, while the eastern provinces, municipality and autonomous regions (except Heilongjiang, Hubei, Jiangsu–Shanghai) have achieved an increase over 5%, among which the Guang- dong–Hainan, Guangxi, Anhui, Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Zhejiang, and Fu- jian have an increase over 10%.

The other day I announced that I would go abroad for further studies right after my college education. My decision evoked the immediate objection of my family: Why? Why should I borrow a huge sum of money for overseas studies while I might receive the same education at home at relatively low cost? My answer is: in addition to knowledge, I can gain experience that those who stay at home will never have.

First, experience is the opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. While a person can study a foreign language at home, the effect can never be compared with constant use of the language in academic and everyday life. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken. Living in English-speaking countries such as America and Australia for several years, for example, my English will be as perfect as native speakers.

Second, living and studying abroad offers me a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, foreign students are likely to encounter their counterparts from different countries and areas and are exposed to different ideas and values. This helps me to have a meaningful understanding of different societies and inevitably sees my own country in a new light.

Third, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is helpful. A person going abroad for study often experiences much more difficulty——difficulty in adapting to a new culture and in dealing with all problems alone. Yet, the difficulty, coupled with the frustration brought on by culture shock, is a rewarding experience for ones future life and development of personality.

Although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. For the benefit is not merely knowledge gained, but the experience desirable in ones personal life.

Some of the games are broadcast on national television.

when this land first became a nation, after winning its independence from engand, it had thirteen states. each of the states was represented of the american flag by a star. all these states were in the eastern part of the continent. as the nation grew toward the west, new states were added and new states appeared on the flag. for a long time, there were 48 states. in 1959, however, two more stars were added to the flag, representing the new states of alaska and hawaii.

indians were the first inhabitants of the land which is now the united states. there are still many thousands of the descendants of these original inhabitants living in all parts of the country. sometimes it is said that the indians are the only real americans.

most americans, however, are descendants of people who came from all over the world to find a new life in a new land. those who came first and in greatest numbers to make their homes on the eastern coast of north america were mostly from england. it is for that reason that the language of the united states is english and that its culture and customs are more like those of england than of any other country in the world.
